INTERNATIONAL CONTROLLING: POLAND

Successful autumn work groups meetings
Another series of the autumn Polish work group meetings took place in the last weeks. For example controllers from the Lublin region stormily discussed the topic that recently seems to be the leading problem of the Polish business: personal controlling - building employee engagement, stimulating activity and creativity of employees. Controllers in Warsaw had the opportunity to familiarize themselves with the objectives and the functioning of the new method used in the process of planning and budgeting - Corridor Planning. And controllers from the Toruń / Bydgoszcz work group focused on Beyond Budgeting as a response the challenges of the current times. The need to take quick decisions, flexibility in operation and increasingly difficult to predict future conditions will favor the development of this approach.

NEW PAYING TAXES REPORT

Tax compliance gets easier for companies, but...
Economies around the world continue to make progress in simplifying and reducing the burden of tax compliance on businesses, says the latest edition of Paying Taxes 2017, a report by The World Bank Group and PwC. the report finds that the Total Tax Rate decreased by 0.1 percentage points to 40.6 percent; time to comply declined by 8 hours to 251 hours; and the number of payments by 0.8 to 25 payments. In an expanded analysis this year, the report finds that for some economies, post-filing processes for value-added tax (VAT) and corporate income tax (CIT) returns could be amongst the most challenging and lengthy processes for businesses to comply with. In some cases, the length of the processes can create cash flow and administrative delays for companies of more than a year. The Paying Taxes 2017 report examines the ease of paying taxes in 190 economies. The report models business taxation in each economy using a medium-sized domestic case study company.

DESIGN THINKING

From a product development methodology to a strategic decision-making process
Rapid technological advances, more demanding clientele and tough competition from innovative start-ups and elsewhere: market incumbents throughout the economy face growing challenges. Companies need to improve the experience they offer their customers by turning digitization to their advantage. At a time when technological developments are challenging many of the familiar business models, it is not unreasonable to wonder how firms can operate successfully in this fast-changing environment. Experts from consultancy Roland Berger believe that the key lies in the way in which companies make decisions – and that a particular innovation method is instrumental here: design thinking. Over the past decade, organizations applying this method have been extremely successful. Compared with all companies in the S&P 500 Index, the valuation of these firms has more than doubled (+219 percent). In their latest study, "Design thinking on every level", Roland Berger presents an innovative approach that can make design thinking the key principle behind all decisions made at all levels and in all areas of any company.
