Once again the International Association of Controllers (ICV) honours the best controlling solutions. This year the Controller Award goes to Covestro Deutschland AG for the project “Comprehensive redesign of the entire controlling as a result of the Covestro carve out from the Bayer Group”. The balance between the short-term pragmatic solution of the IPO processes and the holistic visionary design of the long-term management and controlling landscape in the company was praised by the Jury led by Prof. Dr. Dr. h. c. Jürgen Weber, Chairman of the ICV Board of Trustees, Otto Beisheim School of Management. The Award received Wolfgang Zellerhoff, Global Accounting & Controlling, head of the global controlling functions in Covestro Group at the 41st Controller Congress in Munich on April 25. After the award ceremony Zellerhoff presented the excellent solution in front of 580 listeners. Read more and prepare your application for the year!

41st CONTROLLER CONGRESS IN MUNICH

Controlling in times of digital change – finding new ways
The 41st Controller Congress in Munich gathered 590 participants when it took place on April 25-26, 2016. Controlling experts focused on the challenges of digital transformation. The biggest controlling event in Europe entitled “Planning and managing in the time of digital transformation - Change. Impulse. Chances”  opened Siegfried Gänßlen (picture), the ICV Chairman of the Board with a speech about the digital transformation. As he says, controllers must find their new ways. In the times of radical changes controlling can prove its strength and important role as management’s business partner.

10TH INTERNATIONAL CONTROLLER CONGRESS IN POLAND

Controlling in the time of virtual industry revolution – Change ∙ Impulse ∙ Chances
On May 19/20, 2016 the International Controller Congress takes place for the 10th time – this time in a hotel near Warsaw, with many international flights. In focus stand: active controlling to support management of smart production, trade and services; management by objectives for Open Workforce; new role of Controller in dynamic external and internal changes and Continuous improvement of controlling efficiency. Among the speakers are Prof. Dr. Karsten Oehler (Germany), Marco Wolfrum (Germany), Dr. Walter Schmidt (Germany), Dr. Herwig Friedag (Germany), Robert Beckenbauer (Germany), Dr hab. Rafał Mrówka (Poland), Dr hab. Marlena Ciechan-Kujawa (Poland), Dr Katarzyna Goldmann (Poland) and mag. oec. Romana Petričević (Croatia). All speeches will be in English or translated into English.

INTERNATIONAL CONTROLLING: ICV SERBIA

27th meeting: Controller has a finger in every pie
The 27th ICV Serbia meeting was held on March 21, 2016 in Belgrade. The topic of the meeting was: “How does the controlling at my company look like?” and the meeting was attended by more than 100 controllers. Among the speakers were: Verica Teofilović, Financial Controller, Strauss Adriatic; Vanja Marković, Financial Analyst, Komercijalna Banka; Biljana Plesnik, Manager, Sales Controlling, Carlsberg; Petar Živković, Corporate Financial Controller, Air Serbia and Stevan Čomić, Controlling Manager, Erste Bank. The meeting was opened and closed by Bojan Šćepanović, President of ICV Serbia and Director of Management Centre Belgrade who also presented the topic of Big Data.

ICV POLAND: COOPERATION WITH UNIVERSITIES

New successes of the Polish universities – ICV corporate members
The International Association of Controllers in Poland cooperates closely with two universities that are both ICV corporate members. The programs of the controlling studies are built in accordance with the 10 core elements by the ICV and the IGC. First is Szkoła Główna Handlowa (SGH; international Warsaw School of Economics) which started the next edition of the program of postgraduate studies "Studies of Financial Controlling in Capital Groups" on March 12, 2016 (more about the cooperation here). Second is Nicolaus Copernicus University Toruń. Recently the postgraduate studies “Business Controlling” realized in cooperation with the ICV, were awarded with the quality sign “Studies with Future” in the 1st edition of the Polish Accreditation Program.

ICV HANDBOOK TO BE DISTRIBUTETD IN CROATIA & RUSSIA

Agreement about publication license
On the side of the 41st Controller Congress on April 25-26 in Munich, with the consent of the International Controller Association, Haufe Verlag and licensees from Croatia and Russia agreed about the publication license. This will allow the licensees to translate the ICV book “Working Capital Management” (published by Haufe) into their national languages and to distribute it in the country. The Croatian partner, Jasmina Ocko (picture, mid), leads the ICV Work Group Croatia, the Russian partner Prof. Dr. Sergey Falko, has worked for years as Chairman of the Russian Controller Association in close cooperation with the ICV. Thanks to the agreemen t, the partners get a chance to spread the controlling know-how and the ICV philosophy in their countries. The handbook was first published in German in autumn 2013. It should support sustainable reduction / optimization of Working Capital. The work resulted from 3-years discussions and work processes within the ICV Expert Work Group “Working Capital Management”. Head of the Expert Work Groups is Dr. Hendrik Vater, CFO DHL Supply Chain Southern Europe, CFO Life Science & Healthcare Logistics, DHL Supply Chain EMEA.

Survey 2016 "International Observatory of Management Control"
The annual "International Observatory of Management Control" is organized for the 6th year by the French Chief Financial Officers and Controllers Association (DFCG) in partnership with Decision Performance Conseil. In cooperation with ICV they'd like to welcome the readers of the "International Controller's e-News" to attend the 2016 survey. They invite to share visions and practices of management control in order to draw up a complete analysis of the function. Diving into a digitalization of the economy, Finance is transforming and more particularly the management control. The 2016 survey will not only show the fundamentals of the function but will also point out the new trends and the impact of digital on management control. The survey (English & French) had been designed by our partner Survey Samplin g International and is compatible with all devices. It takes 15 minutes to complete de survey.

BIG DATA – BIG CHALLENGE

Expertise for managing big data and international projects
In order to manage the continually growing flood of information, companies need the right expertise. From autumn 2016, this expertise can be acquired at HTW Berlin. HTW Berlin is the first university in Germany to offer an international Master’s degree in Project Management and Data Science. The four-semester study programme is conducted in English and culminates in a Master of Science degree title. The closing date for applications is 15 July 2016. The Master’s degree programme in Project Management and Data Science at HTW Berlin is aimed at national and international applicants from the first level of management upwards. The programme is also of interest to companies wishing to promote the development of their employees with a view towards a sustainable and forward-looking company strategy.

Next-Generation Text Understanding and Analysis
News portals and social media are rich information sources, for example for predicting stock market trends. Today, numerous service providers allow for searching large text collections by feeding their search engines with descriptive keywords. Keywords tend to be highly ambiguous, though, and quickly show the limits of current search technologies. Computer scientists from Saarbrücken developed a novel text analysis technology that considerably improves searching very large text collections by means of artificial intelligence.

Finance Strives to Balance Analytical Leadership with Cost Control
Finance executives face a delicate balancing act in 2016 as they seek to address multiple and often conflicting priorities. Finance must enhance its ability to support corporate strategies through analytics and information integration in the face of reductions in budgets and staff, according to new Finance Key Issues research from The Hackett Group, Inc. (NASDAQ: HCKT). The Hackett Group's research also identified the five most common transformation initiatives finance organizations expect to use to address these priorities in 2016: improving leadership skills; re-engineering processes; improving performance management capabilities; developing a finance technology road map; and rolling out of business intelligence and analytics applications.

PROFESSIONAL REPORTS VISUALIZATION

IBCS masters in Poland
Rolf Hichert and Jürgen Faisst (IBCS-A), the authors of reports and analyzes visualization standards IBCS®, will give their training in Warsaw, June  2, 2016. The workshop is organized in cooperation with the ICV in Poland and Controlling Partner – company that coordinates the work of the ICV in Poland. Jürgen Faisst already was a speaker at the Controlling Conference in December 2015 in Warsaw – his speech gathered much attention and the controllers expressed their need for more knowledge in this area. The workshop is in English. The registration to the event is obligatory.
