3 questions to Muzaffer Yilmaz

1. You are Head of Controlling & Analytics at Mister Spex, according to Wikipedia.de the "largest online optician in Germany and Europe" and also "pioneer in the industry of online marketing for optical products". To what extent does Mr. Spex break new ground in controlling?

I think that breaking new ground in controlling is shown in Mister Spex in the name of the Controlling & Analytics department, for us CONAN.

We consciously combine traditional financial controlling tasks with questions from the growing topic of analytics. Due to this setup, we are exceptionally technical and close to our customers.

We feel at home with the ERP system as well as with the company's data warehouse. We have an intensive exchange with Accounting, as well as with all operational departments as well as with Business Intelligence.

CONAN wants to support Mister Spex's decision-makers to make profound and data-driven decisions.

2. In your speech, you deal also with the perspective of the controller in a digital start-up company - without giving too much away: is there any reason to hope that controllers are not a dying species?

I would say definitely, on the contrary even. In a digital start-up company, the controller / analyst is very important, and with them, also the underlying data structure. The better and the better tailored to the end customer's the data landscape is in fundamental key figure definitions and dimensions, the more efficient and valid reports and analyzes can be created. For this the controller understanding is very helpful. For example, to explain why sales are only sales when the package arrives to the customer and not when the order is placed on the website.

3. The classic controller and the new controller are distinguished by their...

For that you would have to listen to my speech, until the end... much fun!

I do not want to go to far to define the "new controller".

I think that controllers / analysts in digital startup companies

  • need to understand all the sparring partners of the specialist departments, who support them, but also challenge them to actively help steer the business
  • be prepared to change with often fast changing companies
  • must have a good understanding of the end customer
